Okay, so what is it with football (or soccer for all you lovely american folk) that men simply cannot miss? It's the first sunny day here since winter began last year, and Michael and his brother has gone to watch the latest match, instead of going out and enjoying the sunshine!
The people are so loud its unreal! The stadium is in the next road to mine, (wonder why my partner chose this place eh? lol) and you can hear the chants and cheers so clearly! I know that it'll be impossible to go ANYWHERE once the games finished for a while, it's a wonder how you get so many people in there!
So anyway I'm not one for crowds, so I thought I'd entertain you all with a couple of recipies,
Unfortunately there won't be any pictures to go alongside them, as I've run out of flour and butter and I haven't been food shopping yet. I've been so lazy recently, and my cupboards have been looking unhappily bare, but never fear, you shall have lovely pictures to accompany my next recipe's tomorrow!
Onto my first recipe; which comes from a lovely book called 'The best of Mrs Beeton's Cakes & Baking,' which have some delightful old-style recipies, slightly updated for todays cooking methods. Brilliant! I suggest you buy this, you could even pass them off as an 'old family recipe'!
Butterscotch Brownies
Ingredients:
Fat or margarine for greasing
75g/3oz Butter
175g/6oz soft light brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1tsp vanilla essence
75g/3oz plain flour
1tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
50g/2oz dates, chopped
50g/2oz blanched almonds, chopped
Line and grease an 18cm/7 inch square tin. Set the oven at 160C/325F/gas 3.
Combine the butter and sugar in a large heavy-based saucepan and heat gently until all the sugar has dissolved, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat, cool slightly, then blend in the egg and vanilla essence.
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Add the dates and mix to coat in flour. Stir the flour mixture into the pan with the almonds and mix well.
Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 20-30 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin. When cold, cut into squares and enjoy!
Right now I have to go do some housework and call my mother but I will be back later on today (hopefully with provisions for photographs and then I will show you my next recipe!)
Au revoir mes copains
